Noob at gaming programming :/

I have already used flash to create some mini games animations and other stuff... But I want to initiate my self in programming and create platform games with 8 bit or 16 bit looks...
But I'm having trouble finding a good engine / framework for me since I never used anything beside flash.

What are engines and frameworks for a noob to start working?
